We are just fine. We have a new family member, Ayumi. She came to our house in August from a vet, where she was dumped by a vicious human when she was around 6 weeks.

Sorry that I haven't got a time to update. There are so many things that I want to tell you about the situation in Japan, but here is the urgent matter we are facing now. Please read below message. *This post is originally from Animal Information Blog for Japanese Disaster)

As you know, my home country Japan is in a terrible situation with earthquake, tsunami and the nuclear plant accident that occurred on 3/11.

With the level of help needed, the Japanese government has been blamed that they are too slow to react and provide help in an efficient manner to those that are needed. Of course that delays the help to those that are most vulnerable - pets and other animals.

Originally a 20 kilometer radius around the nuclear plant was designated as an evacuation area. At first, the residents in this area were told to "Evacuate immediately, but you will be able to come back here within a day or two", so they left everything including their pets (they were told pets were not allowed in the shelters). However, after a while they were told by their government that their "home town" has became officially off-limits and they have not been allowed to go back to their homes to get their belongings, pets or other animals.

A month later the earthquake/tsunami, inside of the nuclear evacuation area in Fukushima is in an extremely catastrophic situation for animals left behind including domestic animals (dogs, cats and other small animals) and farm animals (cows, pigs and birds). It has been reported that there are 14,000 cows, 44,000 pigs and 1,890,000 chickens left with no food or water within the 20 kilometer radius around the nuclear plant. (These numbers could be more.) Many of them are already starved to death because Japanese government refused to help even though many have been pleading.

Among the animals who were left in this area, who were able to escape their leash, roamed around the area looking for their owners and food/water. Some cannot even walk anymore so they just sit in front of their owners’ homes waiting for their return. Many cows and their calves in the barns are dead from starvation, cats who are stuck inside of the house are so starved they eat each other. These scenes are literally hell on earth.

Many animal rescue groups were forced to decided themselves to go into the evacuated area and rescue some of the animals, but there are way too many. These organization need government help to rescue animals in the evacuation area including proper protection cloths, cars and equipment which currently they get none. They were forced act upon with their own risk and as a government, that is irresponsible, not to mention inhumane to animals and their people.

Those animal rescue volunteers are going out to rescue or feed the animals in the evacuation area with no radiation protection provided by government. Everyday, they go out to these dangerous zones and continue looking for animals they can help.

In Japan, animals are viewed as "one's belongings" under the law and they are not viewed as "life". This comes from an old Japanese custom. Hence, there is no modern widely accepted animal protection law like in Western culture, it is creating a struggle for animals and rescuers in Japan especially in a situation like this.

Because you are not allowed to remove animals from their property without their owner’s explicit permission, animal rescue groups leave food and water for these animals wherever they can, but it is clear that for both people and animals, it is clearly passed their physical and mental capability to continue like this.

I understand that human life comes first, but in the evacuation camp, many people have lost everything--family, friends and home. Their only hope is to find and reunite with their missing pets. Some cannot sleep or eat because they feel so guilty about leaving their pets behind. Many people fell ill because of this stress.

There may be people who don't care about pets or animals, but there are people that are healed by our animal friends.

From the sanitary stand point, it is also important to point out that it is unsanitary to keep all the dead animals left in that area. Currently within those 20 kilometers from the nuclear plant, reported 14,000 cows, 44,000 pigs and 1,890,000 chickens and many dogs & cats are left there to die from starvation, many of them already dead. With that large number of dead animal left in the area, we cannot eliminate the possibility of zoonotic diseases spreading and the longer they wait the more chance of that with higher need of man power and cost to clean up the affected area.

If the Japanese government decided to provide support in those areas, it would only take a couple of days. If only our government supported them, those animal organizations would not have to risk their lives to stay long periods of time in such a dangerous area to do what they are doing.

Saving animals, saves people’s lives.

Japanese people love their pets, but they really need their government NOW to help their much loved animals.

UPDATE: On 4/20, Asahi.com has reported that Japanese government designated this area as "Caution Zone" which has legal power to restrict people from entering the area. They are allowing residents to go back to their homes and gather their belongings before such "Caution Zone" start to take effects. We would like to make sure that the Animal Rescue Groups and volunteers will also be allow to enter the area with the aid from the government (including proper protection gears from radiation and equipment) and rescue as many animals before its official close up.

I beg you to please encourage Japanese government to do the right thing.

First of all, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the people all over the world who have been praying for Japan.

At that time, I was at home and felt the quake. Though it was not so strong and we had no damage here in Kyoto, it continued about a couple of minutes and made me sick.

According to today's newspaper, 6548 people are confirmed dead, and another 10,000 people are still missing. Countless people are in shelters and we all are worried about their health due to lack of food, drink, medicine, and heating supplies (it's pretty cold these days and snowing...)

Of course we have sent lots of donations including food, drink, clothes, blankets, and daily necessities from all over Japan (and thanks God, we had lots of donations from all over the world!!), but some roads are crushed and there are still some people who are isolated.

Besides that, what bothers us most is that we are running out of gas out there. Even though we have huge amount of quake aid piled up in the storages, we have very little ways to deliver them.

I believe professional rescue teams (including some foreign teams!!) are doing their best, but at this point, no volunteers (except those who live near the disaster-stricken area and have cars with enough fuel) are allowed to go there as to prevent ourselves from being refugees, so all we can do now is to pray for the survivors to hang in there until lifeline will be back.

Another thing is that due to the rolling power outages, Tokyo and surrounding areas (yellow part of the map above) are asked to spend hours without any electricity.

And, of course, the nuclear problem. As you might already know, we are facing the risk of nuclear leak.

I felt so powerless.... I've never felt like that people are as small as an ant.

But it was no one but the survivors who encourages me. When I watched TV helplessly, did nothing but sobbing, a man, who survived the Tsunami but lost his home and was searching debris mound looking for his family, told the interviewer "we have to face up and move on!　Now we have no choice but to ask favors to others, but we will promise to get over it and rebuilt the city again!"

People are people. Not an ant.

We have power. All of you give us the power!!!

And, this photo from a newspaper (Yomiuri Shinbun Newspaper dated Mar. 15 photographed by Hiroto Sekiguchi) I'm not sure if it is okay to show you this picture on the net (in terms copyright), but I would really like to let you know that we have hope!

The 4-month-old baby was rescued form a flooded house after 68 hours the Tsunami hit. Isn't it a miracle!? Isn't this a great picture!?

Now, we also worry about animals there. Lots of pets are missing, might be trembling and starving, looking for their owners. The official animal rescue team and some private rescue teams have already been there and struggling for saving animals.

This is what we've seen on TV. (I heard that these dogs are saved and taken care by a vet now.)

All animal lovers (including me!!!) are trying to figure out what we can do to help animals. I myself set up a website regarding pet rescue. I don't know what I can do now, but I feel that we all are united, and very positive!!!

It's been a nightmare. I can hardly believe what I've seen on TV. The 9.0 magnitude earthquake and Tsunami has been hitting Japan over and over and over... It doesn't seem to be stopped. Thousand of people are dying and missing, and to make matters worse, a nuclear power plant was hit by an explosion after the quakes.

Is this real? or a Hollywood Movie???

One thing really makes us warm and appreciate is that many countries offer help to Japan, and many many many people are praying for Japan...

I've been thinking what I can do to help the victims and their dogs and cats.

OMD! It's been two months since I updated last time!!

I was bewitched into....

Naaaaa. I'm just kidding. What I've got is

How we met him?

Well, it was about 3 weeks ago, Mom found him meowing in a parking lot. He was so small, hungry, and sprayed on his back. (some nasty people must have done this to him! :<)

Mom tried to find his mother or siblings, but couldn't find one. So she just couldn't leave him alone (as he badly needed food, home and love!) and took him home.

How I reacted? Well, I thought mom brought me a new toy!!! I tried to chew him but Mom didn't let me. The little kitten hissed at me and I was freaked out and barked at him in turn.

At first the kitten and I didn't seem to get along with each other, so mom and dad thought we should find someone who can take care of this little kitten, but the very next day,

We named him "COTA", this is how we write his name and its meanings:

We wish him many happy returns!

We don't know exact his age, but when we took him to a vet for the first time, the vet performed a thorough hands-on physical exam on him and told us he was about 6 weeks old, so he is about 9 weeks now.

(even though I have to be strict with him from time to time to teach him how to behave!)

It's been raining quite heavily these days and I've been a bit stressed out as I can't go on a full patrol.

Anybody missed me!? It's been 2 weeks since I updated last time.
No, no, don't blame me. Blame mom who always uses magic excuse of "busy" :(

Well, anyway, this was about a week ago, we had a BBQ party at a riverside.

It's rainy season now in Japan (it begins around the middle of June and lasts about a month) and it's incredibly humid and hot. We, flat noses, cannot go outside during daytime in summer ('cause the heat kills us) but this is the pawfect place for summer.

This place is about an hour North of Kyoto city and rather mountainous area, so the temperature is always much much lower than the city. Also, as it is under the bridge, we can avoid sunlight and rain, we have nice breeze all the time, and even if we get too hot, we can just jump into the river to cool down!

Yesterday, Dad & Mom took me to a vet, and I had a medical check-up and rabies vaccination. Ouch!

In Japan, rabies vaccinations are required by Country law and we have to get vaccinated EVERY YEAR even though Japan is one of the rabies free countries. (No case has been reported since 1957.)

Well, I understand we need to protect ourselves and rabies vaccination is necessary (as some animals with rabies could be smuggled), but I think it should be at least once every three years like most other countries...

Oh well, it's Mother's Day today!

Shrine Visit

Mom had very busy week, but now it's a holiday week in Japan! We have 4 National hoidays studded in the first week of May and we call it "Golden week" as it is a good vacation season.

Many people travel extensively at home and abroad, and everywhere is so crowded. Dad, Mom and I hate crowded places, so we just stay at home and have some relaxation time.

Today, we went to Oharano Shrine, which is one of my favorite places for a walk.

I love these fresh greens in this season.

This is where we wash our hands and rinse our mouths so that we can purify our bodies and minds before we make a prayer to gods (or goddesses).

This is the "torii" gate. The straw rope you can see on the gate is believed to ward off evil spirits and means inside of this rope, it's a sacred area where gods ore goddesses are.

This is "Honden" or sanctuary, where gods (or goddesses) are enshrined.

There are some rules to make a prayer to Japanese gods (or goddesses).
1. Make a money offering to the offertory box.
(The amount is up to you. 10 cents to 1 dollar would be fine.)
2. Ring a bell in front of honden.
(Most shrines have a bell, but this shirine does't, so you can skip this.)
3. Bow twice.
4. Clap twice.
5. Bow once.

Then, make a prayer.

Last Sunday (April 18th), we went to Lake Biwa, which is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, with some of my Frenchie friends.

There were 15 Frenchies and 1 Pug!

Our humans enjoyed BBQ.

How to make your life happier

As it was raining and I couldn't go on a patrol yesterday, I played with...

After that,

Mom gives me a massage everyday, and I really like it very much!!

What's my point??

Well, even if I had a rather blue day, Mom never makes any future promises, like " Okay, I will take you a long walk tomorrow.", because I never think about tomorrow. What I do care about is today, this moment. Besides, who knows what's gonna happen tomorrow??

If something bad happens on a day, I do something happy more than usual on the same day, equalize the bad thing with a happy thing, maintain emotional balance, and end each day with a smile.

Hi there! I am Bunta the Frenchie. Welcome to my blog!

I am a 5-year-old male french bulldog, living in Kyoto, Japan with Dad and Mom. We own an online shop for dog goods (but it's only in Japan, sorry!) and I am a sales manager :D.

Mom(Yumi) and I have been keeping blogs (in Japanese) for more than 4 years, and now we have made lots of furiends all over Japan.

One day, I thought, "Hmm, maybe we should do it in English so that we can make furiends from all over the world!!" That's why we started this blog.

But!! We just didn't have a clue how we can let people & doggies know we are here.

Thanks to Stella, Gunther and Betty, who were my very first follower!!, we came to know Brutas the Frenchie, and thanks to Brutus, we came to know this perfect event for us to make new furiends!!

We went to the Oharano Shrine for Hatsumode, or the first shrine visit of the New Year. In Japan, it is a custom to go to a shrine or temple to pray for a long life and happiness during the new year. Many people goes to Hatsumode on the first, second, or third day of the year, so usually every shrines and temples are so crowded on these days. That's why we go to the shrine after the new year holiday so that we can avoid crowds.

I believe the gods can take care of our prays when not so many people are around!
I always make a wish for one thing.

Now we have a holiday-studded week this week (5 days off from September 19th to 23rd) . Many people are going out, and everywhere is so crowded. I hate the places with so many people, so it is the best to stay home, watching DVDs and relax!

Oharano Shrine

We went to Oharano Shrine, which is about 10 minites ride from our place.

Japanese shrines usuallyl have 2 or 3 gates (or "Torii" in Jpanese). This is the first Torii.

This one is the second Torii. You can see "Shimenawa" (or lengths of braided rice straw rope) on the Torii, indicating that inside of this gate is sacred area where gods (or goddes) are.

This is a pond. Japanese temples usually have a pond to enjoy the view.

This is the third Torii.

In front of the third Torii, there is a place you wash your hands and mouth. All visiters are to rinse their hands and mouth to purify our body before we pray to a god.

This is guardian deer. Japanese shrines or temples usually have a pair of guardian dogs placed at each side of a shrine or temple entrance; believed to ward off evil spirits. This shrine is unique that the guardian figures are deer, instead of dogs. This is because this shrine is derived from the Kasuga Shrine, which is located in the city of Nara and one of the most famouse shrines in Japan, and it is believed that deer are the messanger of gods of the Kasuga Shrine. (Kasuga shrine is famouse for tame deer roaming free aroud the Nara park.)

This is a hall of worship, the place you pray for gods. Inside of the building, the gods are enshrined.

This is the place you tie a fortune telling paper. In Japan, it is a custom that if the prediction is bad, you fold up the fortune telling paper and attach it to a tree in the temple or shrine, and if the prediction is good, you keep it in your purse for the good luck.

Today is the day Bunta became a member of my family.

I remember that day as if it were yesterday.

About 2 weeks before he came to our home, I saw his photo (3 month old puppy) at a French Bulldog shop and couldn't stop thinking about him because he was too adorable. Something was telling me that I had to see him, otherwise I would regret for the rest of my life. A week later I met him at the shop and I had a strong conviction that he was born to be a member of our family!!

When he was a puppy, we had a hard time to understand each other. Though he was an angel when he was sleeping, he was a monster whenever he was awake. It took me too much time to teach him where to pee, not to chew things, what was good or bad and how to behave. He was naughty enough to drive me crazy all the time, but at the same time, he taught me so many things which was very important to us.

After a puppy war period, now we understand each other very well!!
